We left LasVegas midmorning in cool sunshine. The weather forecast is for wind and rain. At lunchtime we got to Death Valley Junction. A ghost town except for the Amargosa Opera House and Hotel Complex, a 1920’s railway town for 300 people at the heyday. This is the opera house that Marta Becket started up. Marta Becket still has a show every Saturday night. Most of her rooms and the opera house have her fresco paintings on the walls. We entered Death Valley in the early afternoon and camped at the Furnace Creek campgrounds. By 4PM the sun was shining and the temperature was 80F, I got out the short pants and the sandals. At 7PM we went to the ranger program titled ‘DVRR: the Death Valley Railway’, the presenter was excellent. On the walk home it started to rain and then by midnight the wind was at 30 MPH (50km/hour).
